Giant Surprises

February 3, 2008

superbowl 2008The Superbowl, the annual football event that glues millions of Americans to their rather large TV screens, this year was an affair to remember. It was supposed to crown the unbeaten New England Patriots as champions (the opponents from New York actually won). It was supposed to be one of the best games ever (and yet it a was sleepy affair until the final fourth quarter). Most importantly it was supposed to show the superiority of that well oiled Patriots machine led by an experience quarter back (ironically beaten by a wildcard team led by a very young quarterback). The hype in other words rarely meets reality but the match confirmed that in life both merit and luck are crucial to winning. It is notable that the play that led to the victory of the NY Giants was sealed in the final minute with most unlikely of touchdown as if to remind us that in sports like in life so many things often hang in the balance. That life is filled by so many events that are surprising, unexpected and unpredictable is what makes life itself so deeply enjoyable.
